With summer ending and back to school season right around the corner, it’s easy for daily routines to get thrown off track and important things like oral hygiene to get lost in the shuffle. Thankfully, the start of a new semester is the perfect opportunity to get back on track and establish new, healthy routines that will have your family acing their oral health exams this school year!

Here are a few ways you can help protect your kids smiles this fall!

Get Some Sleep

With the sun setting later and no schedule to adhere to in the morning, many kids’ bedtimes are extended during the summer, however, rest is essential for staying focused and healthy during the school year. Don’t wait until the night before the new semester to start heading to bed early; establish a new bedtime schedule now so that your children will be well rested and ready to go on day one! This will help them stay awake during the day and less likely to rely on an energy boost from sugary snacks and sodas.

Brush Up on Oral Health Skills

During the regular school year, it can be hard to find a moment to check in with your kids and make sure they’re taking proper care of their teeth. Take a moment now before things get hectic again and observe their brushing and flossing skills. Are they brushing for at least two minutes and flossing between each tooth? If not, demonstrate correct technique and ensure they understand how to do it themselves so they can keep up the good work when you aren’t around.

Stock Up

When you hit the stores to get new pencils, paper, and backpacks, be sure you’re stocked up on oral health supplies, too. Don’t forget to add dental floss, toothpaste, and a cool new toothbrush to your cart. You should be swapping out your brush every three months, so be sure to purchase enough to get you through the year without having to remember to run to the store when you’re already juggling a full schedule.

Pack it Up

Providing your child with a variety of healthy diet options is essential to them making smart choices when it’s time to eat. To keep teeth healthy, avoid foods that are high in carbohydrates and sugar, and instead opt for fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, whole grains, and lean meats.  Even if they get school lunch, provide them with a reusable water bottle that they can refill throughout the day.

Schedule Your Family Dental Exams

Now is the perfect time to schedule your family dental appointments. Going to the dentist before school starts will ensure that your kids’ teeth are healthy and clean, and if your dentist notices any problems they can be corrected before things get busy and will result in missed class time.

Remember, back to school is an exciting time of year, but it should never be too busy to let your oral health slide. Prepare your family for success this semester by protecting their smiles with these helpful suggestions!
