Why are Regular Dental Checkups & Cleanings Important?
If your child is like most kids, their at-home dental hygiene routine might not be as thorough as it could be. After all, they are still learning and growing! Regular checkups and cleanings with Dr. Mehta ensure that your child learns essential health skills, that they become familiar and comfortable with the dentist, and that cavities and other problems are spotted and treated early.
Receiving these preventive services is imperative at any age or stage in life, but it can be particularly beneficial early on for a child. Kids who start visiting the dentist on a regular basis are more likely to continue doing it into adulthood. In other words, a lifetime of healthy smiles should start early if you want your child to prioritize their oral health as they get older.
When Should I Start to Bring My Child for Dental Checkups?
Most professional pediatric organizations recommend beginning dental checkups about six months after the first baby tooth has erupted. Typically, this comes around a baby’s first birthday. Even then, cavities can develop! Plus, starting at this young age can help your child get to know Dr. Mehta and feel comfortable with her gentle treatment. During these early visits, we may not perform a cleaning, but Dr. Mehta will at least inspect your baby’s teeth and answer any questions you have about teething, at-home hygiene, and anything else about their oral development.
What to Expect During a Dental Checkup
A dental checkup typically only takes a couple of minutes to complete. It involves looking at each tooth, at your child’s bite, and at their jawbone development. We will also take X-rays if your child can sit still for a few moments to catch any potential decay that is hidden from view. After this point, Dr. Mehta will review her findings with you and recommend any necessary work.
What to Expect During a Dental Cleaning
Once your child is old enough to start dental cleanings, we will likely use a normal toothbrush to thoroughly scrub their teeth. We will also give them guidance for how to brush and floss at home properly to get rid of “sugar bugs” or bacteria. As they grow, we will switch to the same kind of polishing instrument that your own hygienist uses on your smile!
