When Should My Baby First Go to the Dentist’s Office?
We recommend bringing your infant to see us as soon as their first tooth comes in OR around their first birthday—whichever occurs first! A gentle exam at this point can tell Dr. Mehta a lot about how your child’s mouth and jaws are developing, plus you’ll have a chance to ask any and all questions on your mind about how to take care of your new smile at home.
What Happens During Your Baby’s First Dental Checkup
Dr. Mehta will perform a short exam that primarily involves looking at your child’s mouth and lightly rubbing their gums with her finger to evaluate the condition and position of their incoming teeth. She’ll also discuss best practices for oral hygiene at home and give you plenty of time to ask questions. She will evaluate and treat lip and tongue ties to ensure your infant is feeding well and thriving. Bringing your child to a professional at this stage sets them up for success later on and ensures that potential problems are found (and treated) before they can turn into major issues.
